General Maintenance Assistant

We are looking for a practical, reliable, and motivated Facilities Maintenance Assistant to join our Facilities Management team. This is a varied, hands-on role where you’ll help maintain a portfolio of buildings, ensuring they remain safe, compliant, and well-presented.
Working as part of a team, you’ll carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks, with a strong focus on painting, decorating, and general building fabric repairs. You’ll also support the day-to-day operation of facilities, responding to maintenance requests and helping deliver an excellent service to building users.
This role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse property portfolio while contributing to the delivery of high-quality facilities management services.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance works, including painting, decorating, and general building fabric repairs.
- Complete minor maintenance tasks across a range of building systems, including basic plumbing and general repairs.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with health and safety legislation.
- Accurately record work completed, materials used, and time worked using handheld electronic devices.
- Report defects, maintenance issues, and health and safety concerns through the appropriate systems.
- Assist with opening and securing buildings, including operating alarms and security systems where required.
- Support the setup of meeting rooms and events, including moving furniture and equipment.
- Assist with stock management, deliveries, and replenishment of site consumables.
- Respond to emergency situations such as building failures, weather-related incidents, vandalism, or security issues.
- Support the Facilities Coordinator when required, including providing cover during periods of absence.
- Help maintain site logbooks and ensure statutory documentation is kept up to date.
- Build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors, and building users, delivering excellent customer service at all times.
- Proactively identify opportunities for preventative maintenance to reduce future repair costs.
- Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role.
About You
We’re looking for someone who is proactive, adaptable, and takes pride in delivering high-quality work. You’ll be comfortable working independently as well as part of a team and have a strong commitment to customer service and health and safety.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Apprenticeship, City & Guilds qualification, or NVQ Level 2-4 (or equivalent) in a relevant trade.
- Practical experience in painting and decorating, general building maintenance, and basic plumbing.
- Broad knowledge of building maintenance and construction.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to prioritise work and manage a varied workload.
- Competent IT skills, including the use of handheld devices and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and use initiative.
- Knowledge of manual handling techniques and ability to undertake physical work.
- Willingness to complete training, including First Aid, Fire Warden, and Asbestos Awareness.
Additional Requirements
This role will involve travel around the West Cornwall area though there maybe requirement around East Cornwall.
